Scribe for Period 3, 9/10/12

Today our class briefly went over the SAT #2 words (don't worry, they are still due on Friday) and the short stories "The Open Window" and "The Interlopers".

SAT #2 Words

We read through the SAT words out loud and looked at the exercises. Exercises 1-4 are virtually the same thing as last weeks lesson, but exercise 5 is different. For exercise 5, we talked about how the best way to  read it was to read the two paragraphs that are shown before the actual passage is. Also, on the SAT quiz this week, there will be a couple of questions about the exercise 5 passage as well as the words definitions and parts of speech. The SAT #2 words and exercises are found on pages 25-35 in our Vocabulary Power Plus for the New SAT book.

Short Stories

For homework, we had to choose either "The Open Window" or "The Interlopers", two somewhat dark short stories written by the author Saki, to read and annotate. We were to find some cultural background information on him before we started reading.We have to do the typical 3 questions, connections, and literary devices.

The rest of the period was used as a work day, all of the students either working on their Saki background info, their annotations, their SAT words, or their memoir #2.

Scribe: 9-10-12 Monday Period 5

        The first day of the fourth week of school: Monday the 10th. Today we had a substitute teacher.

To start things off we went through the 15 words of SAT 2 (on page 25). The words are impotent, 

antithesis, maelstrom, emendation, chagrin, bauble, diaphanous, labyrinth, gloat, impediment, bestial, 

effete, shard, bland, and nihilism. The test over the SAT 2 words is on Friday. The homework for today 

is to read either the short story Interlopers or the short story Open Window by Saki, annotate it, and ask 

three higher-level questions about the text. Be sure to think about the question for the semester: "How 

can literature be a motivator for social change?". Also, you need to do the SAT 2 exercises (due 

Friday). In class, we worked the background for the author Saki. We also worked on reading and 

annotating the short stories. If we finished with that, we got to work on the SAT 2 exercises. 

Scribe: 9/7/2012 - Period 5
Hello everybody! Happy Friday!
The good news? The weekend is finally here! The bad news? That doesn't mean you don't have homework. But don't worry! It's not hard! So, Memoir 2 is due on Wednesday, so you should work on that over the weekend. Also, if you want to get ahead, you could also start working on your SAT 2 exercises, which will be due next Friday.
So, today in English, we turned in our SAT 1 exercises, and then we took the SAT 1 quiz. After we finished our quizzes, we did a "Reality Check", which is basically where we answer a few simple questions to tell Smith more about ourselves and our lives, since obviously, she can't sit down and talk with every single one of us one-on-one. Here were the questions:

• "How's it going?"
• "What's one thing that is going well for you? Tell me about it."
• "What's one thing that is challenging for you? Tell me about it."
• "How can I help?"

Then, after that, we walked around and randomly peer edited two memoirs, using the given rubric to evaluate and leave comments on what things were good and what things needed to be changed or improved. We have the weekend to make any necessary changes.

Homework due tomorrow: LOF annotation redos (for students who got 60% of lower), Memoir 1 (no more than two pages.), SAT book work (lesson 1 all exercises excluding exercise 5)

• We started class today by handing back our annotated copies of  "The Sniper". We discussed what we were to do in class and what was due tomorrow (see above).

We also discussed upcoming due dates ( keep in mind, these dates are tentative):

• 9/12- Memoir 2 due
• 9/17- Memoir 3 due
• 9/20- Memoir 4 due (this is subject to change)
• 9/24- Memoir 5 due
• 9/24 PLN #2 (the topic will be on a video just like PLN #1)

• Most time spent in class was used as silent work time for memoirs and SAT words. Smith also used this time to complete PLN #1 conferences.
• For memoir #1, it must be in a Google doc, and Smith recommends sharing it with someone in class.

1. Worked on our memoir (Must be done on google doc and double spaced)
2. Worked on our SAT lessons
3. Studied for our memoir quiz
4. Some people had their PLN 1 meeting
5. Got our Sniper annotations back
6. We learned that if we have a C,D, or F at the end of the semester then we could get moved down

For Homework we need to complete.....

1. Finish memoir 1 (One and a half pages ideal)
2. Finish SAT exercises
3. Study for SAT quiz tomorrow
4. Set-up PLN 1 meeting
5. LOF redos for kids 60 percent of lower due one week from today

Homework:

·         Memoir 1 due on Friday - one and a half to two pages, double spaced

·         Writing Conference – make sure you are signed up for a writing conference when Mrs. Smith is available

Discussion on PLN 1:

·         Class voted to not take a grade on PLN 1, but still record data for it, and definitely take a grade for PLN 2, but not record data

·         Need to apply notes from first PLN to second PLN, make it really good

·         Class average for PLN so far is a 2, only one person received a 3

SAT Questions?

·         Section II – doesn’t matter how sentences end, just need to show meaning of the word

·         Section III

o   Roots – base of a word

o   Prefixes – come before a word

o   Suffixes – come after a word

§  Use these to help break down a word

o   To fill in the blanks of the sentences, use the roots, prefixes, and suffixes to make words

Sniper discussion:

·         What does O’Flaherty’s background show?  What are the effects of war? What happens to morals during a war?

·         Do you think the outcome would have been different if the brothers knew that they were fighting each other?  The author is showing how war separates families.

·         Afterwards, some turned in annotations.

Discussion of Picture of Che Guevara

·         Che Guevara and Fidel Castro “saved” Cuba from dictatorship of military and brought freedom to lower class through words.  After they gained power they “forgot” about the lower class.

·         Shows how a person’s words and image can be a motivator for social change, another example is Martin Luther King

·         Question brought up:  On each side of war everyone thinks that the war is right and will cause everything to get better.  Does war really create change?  Or is everything still the same?

·         People can expose wrongs, but not always correct them

·         More than words are necessary to create social change:

o   Perseverance, actions, consistency, determination, pictures, and symbols
