How Literature Motivates Social Change:

  • Displays different governments and the fallout
  • Encourages individuality
  • Exposes wrongs in society
  • Explains behavioral patterns motivators
  • Convicts and challenges individuals
  • Average people can make a difference
  • Compares social classes
  • Measures diff type of leadership and such
  • Causes you to look at your own life
  • Introspective
  • Shows that the individual is powerless
  • Knowledge is power  
  • Stir up fear
  • Warns future generations
  • Value of freedom
  • Can inspire rebellions
  • Who do I give power to
  • Question future

Smith's Example for Thesis:
  • Literature can be a motivator for radical change because
  • These authors challenge societal norms by
  • (Three main points) warn society to examine the consequences of their actions

Introduction:

  • Start with "Attention Getter"  QUOTE (can be from anywhere you want.)
  • Then explain what does it mean
  • Background information- One sentence on each text stating titles, exposing your reader to what you want to talk about. Compare the lead in quote to thesis and the texts you are going to use. Fast and easy but effective. 5-10 minutes on the intro max. (Should be around 10-12 sentences.)

  • Thesis:
    • Restate question with a why: How can Literature be a motivator social change?
    • REPHRASING QUESTION
    • Literature can be a motivator for social change because...
    • These authors change social norms by...
    • ...... are motivators for social change because...
    • These text caution our society to.....
    • .......warns society to think about actions
    •  Lexepedia.com (To keep come up with new words besides change.) interesting.)
    • Give Reasons Why
    • explore what’s similar in each of the texts
    • what does it mean
    • three main points one per body paragraph

  • PARAGRAPH 1
  • Topic sentence: point from thesis Point 1 from thesis.

  • Set-up first example Start from small scale to large scale to build your argument to persuade
  • Explanation: SHOW NOT TELL
    • What does the quote say
    • Explain the point you want the reader to say
    • Connect to the point of the paragraph-
    • Topic sentence point and a big why is that important
    • Connect to the thesis-motivator for change
  • Transition to next example end with a stronger quote and explanation.  Literature is also used to promote change in (Background)

  • Concluding sentence
  • Tie back to the attention getter.
  • Explain how that works with your thesis
