Scribe, Period 5. 2/1/13

HELLO EVERYBODY!
Happy February!
:)

First and foremost, we discussed our homework (see below).
Due Monday: Thesis for Wikified Research Paper and outline. Not the whole outline will be due, but hopefully you will be able to get all quotes and modern examples by Monday. Don’t be overwhelmed: we are working on this all day, everyday next week. Just get quotes and have the thesis prepared.

Note: The entire Wikified Research Paper will be due Valentines’ Day: Thursday, February 14.

Then, we turned in our CSAP packet ("Words to Live By") and DOL for this week. This week's DOL Quiz was taken as well.

Grammar Quiz: In order to prepare please use the following sentence: the track club visited boulder colorado for a workout.
Extra Credit for the Quiz: Who will win the Superbowl? If you get it right, you get the extra credit! :)

In order to fully comprehend how our project should be done, we took notes on completing the outline.
Please go on Smith’s agenda and go to the Thursday slide. Click on the outline document and go to file: Make a copy. This will be able to help you set up the writing portion  of the Wikified Research Paper. The first week will just be writing and the second week will be the creativity portion of the Google Site. No personal words allowed in this document.

Smith explained the outline with her own example:
INTRO:

  • Attention getter
  • Explain attention getter
  • Background information
  • Present other side
  • Thesis

Attention Getter: can be a video from a source or you can make your own video (CITE every piece of information or media you use), picture, song, quote, writing. It is limitless: just pull viewers into your paper. **You must explain the point of the video, song, picture you use.**

Background information
: Must include one to two sentences on Little Brother and 1984. Remember to make it a brief summary and not a synopsis of the entire book. NO “1984 is about...”

Present the other side: This can be skipped if it does not fit into your paper.  Paper can be positive or negative. Presenting the other side of an argument is, for example, "Although we are dependent on technology, technology has helped us become more aware of our surroundings."

Thesis: Last sentence or 2. Must show the other side. What we have learned, haven’t learned and where we are going must be included.

Example Structure for the Thesis, but Smith prefers you do it your own way:

"Although society has learned the power of groups, society still continues to fall short with empowering individuals; therefore, in the future, society will become________."

You may have your paragraphs in any order: haven’t learned then have, have learned then haven't, etc. This will create a positive or negative tone or you can even start/end with your strongest paragraph.

BODY PARAGRAPHS:

  • topic sentence with why
  • set up first point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up second point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up modern example
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • Concluding sentence

*For each body you need LB, 1984, and modern examples.
EXAMPLE: BODY 1: The power of groups
LB: XNetters shut down DHS
1984:
Big Brother + Party+ Spies (can have multiple quotes)
Modern: Syria.
For Syria for example, you can put a CNN video to make a point about the power of groups instead of all textual evidence. Transition between evidences is key.
Connect to topic sentence: Power of groups
Connect to thesis: What we have learned. Show how it was learned.

Transition, EXAMPLE: BODY 2: Power of individuals

  • topic sentence with why
  • set up first point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up second point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up modern example
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • Concluding sentence

1984: The system broke Wilson
LB: The system broke Darryl, Marcus couldn't do it alone (may have more than one piece of evidence.)
Modern: Overthrown Dictators, Full body scans
Notice how Smith changed the order of the evidence ending with her strongest point. She also easily built off from 1984 to LB. Your writing should flow.
Connect to topic sentence: haven’t learned
Connect to thesis: show how it is not learned

EXAMPLE: BODY 3: Where we are going as a result:
*Again, it should flow/build up to the best argument.
  • topic sentence with why
  • set up first point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up second point
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • transition
  • set-up modern example
  • lead-in, “quote” (citation).
  • explanation of quote- what does quote say
  • connect quote to paragraph
  • connect quote to thesis
  • Concluding sentence

Modern: as children we are taught to all sit in a circle with no one outside of the circle. We are also taught to blend in, for example, by what we wear. If you were a girl wearing boy clothes and stood out, it was looked down upon.
Modern: now, the most common phones are iPhones. Apple is the superior company. Before, many different type of companies existed, but in order to blend in we all get the same phone.
Modern: North Korea. Look it up what is occurring in North Korea here.

CONCLUSION: SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
  • restate thesis
  • How will problem be solved
  • Review points made
  • Connect to solution
  • connect to attention getter- leave lasting thoughts
Ideas:
  • By encouraging individuality
  • Encouragement to have others think critically
